Ghoulish Recipes for your Halloween Party!

Won't Believe Your Eyes: an easy treat that relies on presentation to make it frightening

Ingredients: 

• Grapes 
• Box with hole cut into the top 
• Black cloth to cover the hole (optional)

For this recipe you simply need to peel the grapes by following the steps in this link: how to peel grapes easily. Then place peeled grapes into a bowl and cover with the box. Have party guests reach their hands into the box to find bowl of "eyeballs" and then instruct them to eat the treat! 

Finger Food: you can make this a healthy treat by using whole wheat dough

Ingredients: 

• Pizza dough (whole wheat or regular) 
• Sliced almonds 
• Pizza Sauce (optional) 

For this recipe you simply take some pizza dough and separate it into small sections (about the size of a finger) and then roll and shape the dough to look like a human finger. Add the sliced almond to the tip (as the fingernail) and then bake according to the directions on the pizza dough. You can also add pizza sauce for dipping and label it as blood. 

Mad Scientist Punch: kids can help make this potion

Ingredients: 

• 2 cans orange juice concentrate (thawed) 
• 2 cups of water 
• Koolaid mix pouch 
• 2 liters of lemon lime soda 
• 1 pint of orange sherbert 
• various sized beakers to serve the punch in 

For this recipe you combine concentrate, water, Koolaid, and soda into a large punch bowl and chill. When serving, pour the punch in beakers and add two scoops of orange sherbert to the top.

Tulip Mania: A Brief History

"A tulip doesn't strive to impress anyone. It doesn't struggle to be different than a rose. It doesn't have to.  It is different." ~Marianne Williamson 

As many know, tulips are an iconic flower/symbol of the spring months. However, some may not know about the history of Tulip Mania. This was a period during the Dutch Golden Age when the prices of the recently introduced tulip bulbs reached extremely high levels and then eventually crashed. At the peak of tulip mania (March of 1637), a single tulip bulb could sell for more than 10 times the annual income of a skilled craftsman!

The tulip was a very different than any other flower in Europe at that time due to it's intense petal color. It was seen as a status symbol and was a coveted luxury of the elite. Due to the fact that it is grown from a bulb, which can take years to mature to a flowering plant, the supply was far less available than the demand. By 1636 the tulip became the 4th largest Dutch export. As with many increases in price due to popularity, the price eventually collapsed, leaving many to lose their fortunes that they had just recently acquired. The crash began in Haarlem when, for the first time, buyers did not show up for a routine bulb auction. It is believed that this was due to the fact that Haarlem was at the height of an outbreak of bubonic plague.

Happy Halloween!!

Halloween is this week, here are some great last minute Halloween costumes for those of you who aren't prepared! Don't forget to send your Halloween arrangements today. Have a safe and fun holiday from everyone at A Beautiful Bouquet Florist!

1. Tickled Pink: dress in all pink and be sure to have a feather with you! 
2. iPad: dress in all black and print out "app" icons and tape them to your outfit. 
3. Brawny Man: all you need is a red plaid shirt and some beard stubble. 
4. Cowboy/cowgirl: just add a cowboy hat, boots, and some jeans. So simple! 
5. Lady Bug: wear all red and add black felt dots and two pipe cleaners to headband for antenna. 
6. Baby: wear a bib, carry a rattle or pacifier, and fashion a diaper out of old sheets.

How to keep your arrangements fresh!

Here at A Beautiful Bouquet Florist, we often get asked what should be done to keep floral arrangements fresh and alive. These are our best tips for keeping your arrangements beautiful and happy!

1. The first and most important step to keeping your arrangements fresh is to CHANGE THE WATER DAILY! We often tell customers that if the water in the vase doesn't look like something you would like to drink, the flowers probably don't want to drink it either. To do this you can grab the arrangement tightly at the top of the vase and pull the flowers out to change the water or you can simply run the water along the edge of the inside of the vase until all of the old water has been removed and replaced with fresh water. (**note: if you have a water softener system, please do not use your tap water as this will harm the flowers) 
2. Another simple step is to keep the arrangement away from extreme cold or heat. Do no place arrangements near a vent that is blowing hot air and do not place near a window when it is cold or hot outside. Also keep your arrangement out of direct sunlight. Again, just like you, flowers prefer to be kept a temperature that is comfortable and not too extreme. 
3. Keep bacteria at bay! Bacteria is a fresh cut flower arrangement's biggest enemy. This can be done by keeping the water changed daily, keeping the vase clean, and every so often snip the ends off the flower stem at a 45 degree angle. This angle and removal of older tips helps prevent bacteria.
4. Remove any greenery (leaves, etc..) that is submerged in the water. This will keep the water cleaner and prevent the growth of bacteria. 
5. You can also lightly mist most flowers in order to give them an extra drink of water. (**Hydrangeas (white and blue flower seen above) like water so much that you can actually dip the blooms in a bowl of clean water) 

There are also many tips online that you can experiment with in order to see what works best for your flowers. Overall, the best tip for keeping your arrangement happy and healthy, is to change the water and to keep the arrangement in a cool room away from the sun and extreme temperatures.
